Salang Tunnel Explosion (1982)

💀 1,000direct victims
On November 3, 1982, in the Salang tunnel in Afghanistan, a collision between a fuel truck and a Soviet military convoy sets off a monstrous fire at 3,400 meters altitude. The fire asphyxiates hundreds of soldiers and civilians trapped in this two-and-a-half-kilometer passage with no ventilation. Estimates range between 1,000 and 2,700 victims, one of the worst disasters of the Soviet occupation.
